Gifted Education Awareness Week 2012 - Monday 27th February to March 3rd
29/02/2026

During Gifted Education Awareness Week, Gifted and Talented Network Ireland aims to raise awareness of the presence and needs of gifted children in the classroom. Good teaching is good teaching regardless of a childs ability. However, the absence of specific training in issues affecting the development of gifted children often leads to these children going unrecognised in the classroom.

Myths and stereotypes about gifted children tend to compound the difficulties they face. This is particularly so because it is often assumed the high achiever is the gifted child and that gifted children will do okay no matter what happens. Neither of these is true.

Gifted Education Awareness Week starts with a Twitter chat on Monday 27th on #edchatie at 8.30pm, hosted by Fred Boss of the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE). This will be a good starting point for teachers who want to learn more about giftedness.

A series of posts on a variety of blogs will help spread awareness throughout the week along with updates on Facebook

https://www.facebook.com/groups/176526875729472 and https://www.facebook.com/DazzledandFrazzled), Twitter (@GTNIrl and #GEAW2012) and Google+.

An information leaflet and flyer will be emailed to SEN coordinators in primary and post primary schools for distribution to interested staff.

The week culminates with the Annual Conference of the Centre for Talented Youth Ireland (CTYI) which has as its theme Meeting the Needs of Gifted Children Inside  and Outside the Classroom.

Gifted Education Awareness Week is supported by CTYI (http://www.dcu.ie/ctyi) and the Institute of Child Education and Psychology Europe (ICEPE) (http://www.icepe.eu).
